The Kumbia Kings, formed by AB Quintanilla and Cruz Martínez, had over a decade of tremendous success, built on a unique sound that blended traditional Tex-Mex cumbia with R&B, funk and pop. The Kings were equal parts funky dance moves and soulful R&B.
And then, they split up. Now, Quintanilla has his own group and so does Martínez. And although Martinez retained the Kumbia Kings moniker, he has dubbed his new group (which is actually made up of many former Kumbia Kings members) as Cruz Martínez Presenta Los Super Reyes (Cruz Martínez Presents the Super Kings).
On their introductory album, El Regreso De Los Super Reyes, the group retains that Kumbia Kings sound, beginning with the first track "Muévelo," a danceable cumbia that, truth be told, could have come straight out of a Kumbia Kings album. It's still fun, though, with a frenetic multi-layered blend of synthesizers and accordions that invites listeners to "move it."
Turn to the other side of Los Super Reyes, the soulful side, on "Nada Nos Va a Separar." This is a straight-ahead ballad with R&B vocals that play over guitars and keyboards, in a mix of old and new school.
Martínez is not above throwing jabs at his former business partner, both overtly (as he does in the "Outro: Give It Up Bud," where he actually names Quintanilla) and with more subtlety, as he does in "Yo Seré." Listen carefully to the lyrics and you'll hear a recount of incidents and accusations that obviously built up over time. What makes the track work, however, is its irresistible cumbia beat under bold rapping and singing.
The old Kumbia Kings, with its bilingual, bicultural membership, always inserted English, or at least Spanglish in their tracks. Super Reyes does the same and also return to those beats they love so well; "Quédate Más" almost quotes the Jackson Five's "ABC." Later, on "Perfect Girl," they tap former Kumbia King Frankie J to sing this soulful, Motown ballad set over synthesized strings.
But the blend of the old and the new can be perhaps be best found on "La Neta," featuring guest artist Zion. A mix of traditional, accordion-filled cumbia and reggaetón it exemplifies Super Reyes' continued interest in using the rhythms that young Latinos are listening to.
