About the Album

Gerald Levert died tragically at the age of 40 just before Christmas 2006. In My Songs represents his last work, a 12-track follow-up to Do I Speak For The World on Atlantic. The prolific Levert has released numerous solo records and almost as many with his trio, LeVert. He's produced for such soul luminaries as Teddy Pendergrass and Barry White. The son of O'Jays lead singer, Eddie Levert, Gerald Levert was the closest thing American soul music has to royalty. His lustrous voice, classic good taste and emotional delivery will be missed.

In My Songs' title track opens the CD with a dedication from Eddie Levert. The tune is a slow groove. The lyrics are a plea for love. Levert's voice is mature and stylish, and he can deliver a lyric. Gerald Levert is a breathtaking singer, with significant technical gifts. He has an enviable range and flexibility that he uses to considerable emotional effect. As you listen to him, you can't help but feel that with stronger material: say Ashford and Simpson writing for him, he would have become a huge crossover star.

The coolest groove opens "Wanna Get Up With You." The electric piano and little cowbell thing are clever, and Levert just wails over the string pad. While the songs aren't the record's greatest strength, the production and arrangements are full of wit and style. These guys know how to make a record, and this is very sophisticated soul, with plenty of seventies strings to flesh it out. "Fall Back" could be a Curtis Mayfield tune. The guitar effect is masterful. Again, Levert scats and moans (all beautifully in tune). You'll kick back with this on the changer and just let it groove. These aren't memorable tracks, it's just very cool soul.

Gerald Levert can really roll on a twelve-eight drag. The metronomic high-hat gives him all the rhythmic room his style requires. "I consider myself the luckiest guy in the world" is a particularly poignant lyric considering the circumstances. They called Levert the "Teddy Bear" and songs like "Sweeter" ("Tomorrow I'm gonna be sweeter than I am today") would be too trite in less skillful hands. What comes through in this collection is that Levert was no player. His lyrics are painfully personal and loving. He's not a bad boy, he's a family guy and an honest singer. He followed in his dad's footsteps and went into the family business: he's all about family and community.

It seems corny to write about a record like this in these terms. Levert's untimely death changed the dynamic of this project, and will give anybody who hears it different ears. The testimonials that make up the linear notes are a credit to a good guy. Gerald Levert, straight shooter, amazing voice, Soul royalty-R.I.P.

About the Artist

b. 13 July 1966, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. The son of O'Jays founder Eddie LeVert. Bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary R&B, Gerald LeVert has a fine vocal technique first heard in 1985 with the release of the debut album by LeVert. By the time 1988's Just Coolin' had become a major US success, Gerald had already taken time off from the parent group to produce a number of artists with Marc Gordon, including Stephanie Mills, James Ingram, Miki Howard, the O'Jays and Troop. He also wrote "Whatever It Takes" for Anita Baker's platinum-selling 1990 set, Compositions. The same year, LeVert's Rope-A-Dope went gold. As head of Atlantic Records' Trevel Productions, Gerald also worked with new vocal groups Rude Boy and Men At Large. All these endeavours preceded the announcement of his solo career in 1991. The timing had been carefully planned, and paid rewards when "School Me", "Can You Handle It", "Baby Hold On To Me' (featuring his father) and the title track of the parent album Private Line achieved major success. The songs, written in conjunction with new partner Tony Nicholas, established him as a major force in contemporary R&B, with an equal emphasis on up-tempo dance numbers and balladeering. Afterwards, Gerald returned to work with LeVert (the band), and their fifth album, 1992's For Real Tho", earned another gold disc.

Further production work with Barry White, Little Joe (lead singer of Rude Boy), Drama and Men At Large interrupted preparations for a second solo set, which finally followed in 1994. Groove On was envisaged by the artist as "a 90s version of a 60s soul show, with a band, a whole horn section, the works". Once more working with Nicholas, this time the ballads included "I'd Give Anything" (produced by the Grammy award-winning David Foster), which became the album's first hit single, and the "issue" song "How Many Times", which dealt with a woman suffering physical and emotional abuse. The reconstruction of a traditional soul dynamic was enshrined by the presence of his father as co-producer on "Same Time, Same Place", while "Can't Help Myself" was originally written for the Forest Whitaker movie Strapped. In 1995, he enjoyed further international success with "Answering Service", confirming Gerald as one of the leading lights of modern soul and vocal R&B. The same year also produced a well-received collection of duets performed with his father (as Gerald And Eddie LeVert), titled Father And Son. In 1997, Gerald teamed-up with Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill for the "soul supergroup" album, Levert Sweat Gill. His new solo album, Love & Consequences featured the Top 20 singles, "Thinkin' Bout It" and "Taking Everything". The follow-ups G and Gerald's World, though lesser works, maintained LeVert's commercial presence.
