No, it turns on when you plug it in and off when you unplug it. There are no buttons or settings at all.

Mine came with no switches to turn it on or off. I unplug it to turn it off and plug it in to turn it on.

There is no fan in this Ronco dehydrator. Just an exposed element in the base of the unit. That's why you get uneven drying and have to rotate trays. Also why drying times are so long in this dehydrator.

No, it doesn't, therefore not made well at all, and trays so thin and fragile that I didn't dare even use it once!

I remember a bottom tray catch the juice or grease but I blame its poor engineering design because its juice and grease just drop over the heat generator. I sometimes dry up bottom tray with paper towel.

You could line the bottom with tin foil if the meat is that greasy. Actually, you shouldn't dry fatty meat in a dehydrater unless you plan to use it right away or freeze it right away. Lean meat makes the best jerky or stew meat when dehydrated then reconstituted.

Yes. Very low heat. The dehydrator does not cook it dries.

Of course it does. The heating element is what creates the heat to dry the product being dehydrated.

At the base of the dehydrator is a circular heating element. It doesn't get very hot, but hot enough to do the job. Sorry I don't know the heat temperature itself, but I let the element cool before cleaning the machine. It doesn't get drippy or dirty when dehydrating fruit. Meat was really tough and did not taste good.

I have only had the dehydrater a few days and have already made banana chips, cinnamon apple chips, and dried mango. Absolutely easy to use!!

A friend of mine has one and I liked her results.
'You' choose the food you want.  You decide how crunchy or chewy you want the food.  It's great for people on the go.  You could actually take a 'meal in a bag' as you're running out the door.  Beef jerky, vegetables & fruit - all healthy.

If you are a newbie (such as myself) who is looking to learn the basics on food dehydrating, this unit will a great learning tool. I love mine. As you will read in other reviews, the plastic trays are lightweight and feels brittle. Common sense will tell you to treat the trays delicately. I've used this dehydrator pretty much around the clock since it came out of the box three weeks ago and haven't had a single problem with it yet.

You may read the trays will melt; I suspect that is because people are attempting to dehydrate meats. This unit is NOT suitable for dehydrating meats. It's great for fruits and vegetables, though. Slow, yes; but also noiseless due to the lack of a fan inside to circulate air. My next dehydrator will have a fan to speed things up a bit.

That said, I've dehydrated bananas, apples, watermelon, celery, garden peppers and zucchini. Tomorrow I will do some mushrooms, onions and tomatoes from the garden. It takes longer than some units to dehydrate, but I can live with that. Watermelon took around 20 hours, but what can you expect from a fruit that is mostly water? Do make sure to get the mesh screens when you purchase this unit, you will need them and they are not included. You may also want to visit the Ronco website and get additional trays, because once you begin to get the hang of this, you will find many things to dehydrate that would otherwise end up in the trash.

Ronco does sell trays for jerky that look to be more sturdy, but I have no experience with these. Just handle with care, have patience with rotating trays (which you'll have to do with any unit) and you will get along fine to learn the basics while you save up to get a more advanced dehydrator. I have found that running the dehydrator from an automatic timer is a great help if you would like to have it turn off during the night or while you're away from home.

Great For Newbies

AWESOME! I bought this for a friend for his birthday so he can make jerky and dog treats and he's going to go buy another one he loves it so much! I am thrilled to death that he loves it so much.  He washed it, put it together and filled it with chicken breast strips and it was done in no time at all! Wonderful!! The only thing is there were really no instructions with it but it did have a few recipes so he easily figured it out from there. This was an inexpensive but fabulous gift that I really was proud to give! I already have 2 but different brands that take a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time to get the job done, I may need to get a RONCO! LOL  If you're in the least bit interested in dehydrating foods, herbs or anything else for that matter I think this is the one to get.  It is by far one of the best for the least expenditure!
