Set in Virginia City, Nevada, it is the story of the Cartwrights, owners of a nearby 600,000-acre ranch - The Ponderosa. With Canadian actor Lorne Greene as Ben Cartwright, a three-time widower; Pernell Roberts as eldest son Adam; big Dan Blocker as son Hoss; Michael Landon as youngest son, Little Joe; Victor Sen Yung as Hop Sing, the cook; Ray Teal as Sheriff Roy Coffee, the Virginia City lawman who frequently called on the Cartwrights for assistance; David Canary as foreman Mr. Canaday; Mitch Vogel as Jamie Hunter, a young runaway taken in by the Cartwrights; and Tim Matheson as ranch hand Griff King, an ex-con. Each of the Cartwright sons was a half-brother to the other two; the story of Ben Cartwright's three marriages was told in flashbacks. Adam, born in New England, was the son of Ben's first wife Elizabeth. Hoss was the son of second wife Inger, a woman of Scandinavian extraction who was killed by Indians; Hoss's real name is Eric (Hoss is Norwegian for "good luck"). Little Joe, the youngest, was the son of Marie, whom Ben met in New Orleans; Marie died as the result of a fall from her horse.
