Not the Best in the World...,
08/06/2009
I bought this DVD player on July 23 as a replacement for my DVD/VCR Combo unit which I also purchased from Wal-Mart. Sadly, I will be returning it as it will not read some of the DVD's in my collection which includes a burned DVD-R and an anime DVD that plays flawlessly on every other player including my old one. But, I feel that I should type a review for future buyers about a few things to watch out for if considering this product.
The very first thing I noticed when I took out the box was how small the remote control is. My mom was quick to say "I can see you loosing that thing often." (which I did during the few weeks I've had it) The buttons were really tightly compacted, even with my long and slender fingers, and I would often mistakenly press the "Track Forward" key when I really wanted to press the "Scan Ahead". Another thing that I really didn't like was the fact there was no independent "Subtitle" or "Audio" buttons--they're integrated into the four-way directional keypad. There was also no independent "Angle" button where you could change the angle on the screen (For those who are Anime connoisseurs, this equates to not being able to immediately change the text on screen from Japanese to English without navigating through menus. Also, there are three "Menu" buttons--"Disk Menu", "Title Menu", and a key just labeled "Menu". Little redundant, wouldn't you say? One of these could've been the "Angle" button that I so greatly desired.
Once I started using the player, I got quite annoyed with the panel-display counter. It doesn't show hours, minutes and seconds at the same time. It also doesn't show track number.
I also had trouble with playing home-made DVD's. For example, I made a DVD of the Inauguration ceremony. It played fine on my first DVD player, but when I popped it into this one, it wouldn't read it at all. But all my other DVD-R's played just fine.
I have to say, while at first I was quite satisfied with this player and ready and willing to adapt to it, I realized that I could do better.
