Oh my, what Eminem hath wrought. Straight outta undisclosed areas of Los Angeles comes metal-emo-rap act, Hollywood Undead -- a six man wrecking crew intent on torching the city of angels with man-eating rhymes about 40 ouncers, loose women and their unwavering devotion to the false paradise that is surreptitiously sucking the life out of them. In the works since 2005, the band's 14 track debut, Swan Songs, is the soundtrack to an apocalyptic party that never stops. Even in rare moments of reflection, as in "Sell Your Soul," it takes little more than a verse or two for the jam to make its way to the jaw-gnashing, teeth-grinding chorus. These dudes (all of whom sport masks and aliases) need therapy -- either that, or a relocation strategy. City life appears to be pretty ridiculously toxic. Though most of these tracks continue in the vein of the thunderous metal-rap opener, "Undead," there are moments on here that are surprisingly emo. The downright FM-friendly chorus on "No. 5" and the big club-style breakdown in "No Other Place" suggest that Hollywood Undead have an ear to the money. But, clearly, their primary goal is to consume copious amounts of alcohol and rack 'n' stack the ladies. Swan Songs is not without its moments of levity, however. On "The Diary," one of the MCs laments about his lifestyle, claiming "I don't want to be like this." The solution? More alcohol! And if the title "Bottle And A Gun" doesn't spell it out for you, check out the silly, spoken-word intro to this beer-soaked tale of rollin' hard in the big city. I don't suspect you'll be seeing these guys around the local AA meeting -- not until their probation officer makes them go anyway. There are definitely tracks that break from the pack on Swan Songs -- in particular, the uncharacteristic rocker "This Love, This Hate" and the apocalyptic child chorus on "Young." But, for the most part, what you've got here are six angry young men who would rather throw gas on their burning city than put out the fire. Welcome to Hollywood people, anybody got a match? Hollywood Undead hail (unsurprisingly) from the streets of Hollywood, CA, mixing brash hip-hop, rock, and minor metalcore touches with cocky posturing and thug attitudes. Owing much of its popularity and exposure to the social networking monster MySpace, the group -- whose members usually wear masks in public -- started as the musical project of J-Dog and Tha Producer in June 2005. They uploaded some new music to their profile and very quickly started amassing song plays and online friends with tracks about drinking, sex, and emo kids. The gang, as the guys liked to refer to themselves, also grew to include seven members: J-Dog and Tha Producer alongside Charlie Scene, Johnny 3 Tears (formerly called the Server), Funny Man, Shady Jeff, and Da Kurlzz. Shady Jeff, however, made his exit after only a few months. As the band's online profile steadily increased, MySpace head honcho Tom Anderson wasn't immune and wound up featuring Hollywood Undead's song "No. 5" on MySpace's first compilation album, in addition to giving them the distinction of being the first act signed to the site's new record label (distributed by Interscope) in 2005. Swan Songs finally appeared in 2008. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide Information provided by Macrovision Corporation © 2009. All Rights Reserved.
