With its 2005 debut album, Il Divo won over the hearts and ears with scores of fans, becoming the first band since Led Zeppelin to score a number one album without releasing a single. A Christmas album followed, and now fans get the much-anticipated sophomore disc with Ancora. This classically trained quartet is part boy band, part Andrea Bocelli, and its innovative popera music makes it hard to classify but easy to love.
Ancora delivers what fans are craving: 10 new, familiar-but-different songs delivered with amazing vocal prowess. The disc kicks off with an emotional Italian rendition of Eric Carmen's classic, "All By Myself." It is delivered with operatic flair and soaring vocals that convey the spirit of this song about living in the aftermath of love.
The multicultural band sings in English just once on the album, on "I Believe In You." Celine Dion joins in to contribute her incredible vocals, which harmonize perfectly with the boys in the band. This time around, Dion sings in French while Il Divo provides English vocals, then joins her in French. It is a stirring song about following your dreams and believing in yourself, and the combination of these five voices are absolutely goose bump inducing.
Josh Grobin scored a huge hit with "You Raise Me Up," and Il Divo could likely do the same with its Spanish version of the song. Like Grobin before them, Il Divo builds the power of this song gradually, letting the music sway the emotions as much as the lyrics do. A moving song about the power of love, this track evolves from a gentle ballad into an operatic tour de force. By the time the song swells into its final chorus, it is a tidal wave of sound and feelings that, together, create an unstoppable force.
One of the highlights of the disc that is bound to find its way onto listeners' iPods is Il Divo's cover of Mariah Carey's "Hero." Presented in Spanish, Il Divo's "Heroe" stays fairly true to the original, while at the same time injecting it with theatrical emotion and driving home the message that people's true strengths lie within.
Anyone who loved Il Divo's debut and/or Christmas album will fall in love all over again with Ancora. It is a brilliant reminder that music is a universal language that speaks as much to the heart as it does to the ears.

Il Divo put a fresh face on popular songs, utilizing their exceptional voices, good looks, and cultural diversity to bring their romantic blend of classical and pop music to audiences around the world. Formed after a two-year search, the quartet is comprised of American tenor David Miller, popular French singer Sébastien Izambard, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, and Spanish baritone Carlos Marin. Their eponymous debut album was released in April of 2005 and featured a diverse play list that included a cover of the Toni Braxton hit "Unbreak My Heart" and the Frank Sinatra standard "My Way," as well as "Nella Fantasia," a newly arranged -- with vocals -- version of "Gabriel's Oboe" from Ennio Morricone's score for The Mission. It became a massive worldwide hit, and the quartet returned in 2005 with Ancora, a ten-track collection of new music featuring the hit "I Believe in You" with Celine Dion. The similarly themed Siempre arrived in 2006, followed by Promise in 2008. ~ J ames Christopher Monger, All Music Guide
