The made-for-television movie Another Cinderella Story is a pastiche of stories, from Cinderella to Dirty Dancing. But essentially, the story is about Mary Santiago, played by Selena Gomez (of Disney's Wizards Of Waverly Place), a social outcast who is living a Cinderella life with a wicked stepmother and stepsisters. Things change when handsome Joey Parker (played by Drew Seeley, a star of the High School Musical concert tour and co-writer of the High School Musical hit "Get'Cha Head In The Game"), a pop star whose career is on the wane, returns to high school to hold a contest to find the girl to star in his next video.

Of course, trying to find rhyme or reason in fairy tales is rather silly. So, just believe the premise and get carried away with the album, which is mostly made up of up-tempo dance tracks that range from hip-hop inclined to plain dance and disco, as befitting a story where what's at stake is winning a dance competition.

The album kicks of with "Tell Me Something I Don't Know," a high-octane dance track with sass and speed whose sheer pace belies the seriousness of the lyrics ("I hear it every day, I hear it all the time/ I'll never amount to anything/ Tell me something I don't know," sings Gomez with defiant self-assurance.

Next up is Seeley's entrance in his quest for a partner, with Gomez entering in a duet full of counterpoint and call and response over techno dance beats.

Touches of hip-hop are also incorporated on "Don't Be Shy," which features Lil' JJ and Chani, and on "Just That Girl," where R&B vocals intersperse with loops and beats.

The soundtrack to Another Cinderella Story never slows its pace. The single exception is the instrumental "Valentine's Dance Tango," the closest thing to a romantic track here, with its lyrical, evocative strings and subtle percussion and bandoneon.

Then, there's also "No Average Angel" (performed by up and comer Tiffany Giardina) a girlie track that cries independence ("I'm not in designer jeans, I don't need plastic surgery, I'm not an imitation," declare the lyrics), and whose peppy, up-tempo beat and inordinately catchy chorus ensures that tons of little girls and tweens will be singing this in no time.

Another Cinderella Story includes three versions of the single "New Classic," including a live version and an acoustic version that ends the album. It's a surprising -- and sweet -- finale for a fairy tale with contemporary edges.
