What Do the Numbers Mean?

Binoculars are referred to by two numbers; for example, 12 x 50. The first number is the magnification power. In this example, the object being viewed appears to be 12 times closer. The larger the magnification number, the closer your image will be. The second number is the diameter of the objective lens in millimeters. The larger the lens, the more light enters the binocular, giving a crisp, clear picture. So, the larger your objective lens is, the clearer and brighter your image will be.

What Are My Choices?

  • Wide-angle binoculars use porro prisms, which allow the front lenses to be offset from the eyepiece, providing a greater sense of depth and a wider field of view. These are ideal for tracking fast-moving action across wide areas, such as football fields, racetracks and wilderness terrain.
  • Compact binoculars use roof prisms that align with the eyepiece, allowing for their smaller size and lighter weight. These are great for birding, sporting events or any activity that requires you to carry them a lot.
  • Binoculars with a digital camera are perfect for seeing the action up close and capturing it. Use these gadgets for monitoring wildlife or getting action shots at sporting events.

    What do the numbers mean?
Binoculars are referred to by 2 numbers separated by an "x". The first number is the power (magnification). For example, on this 12 x 50 binocular, the object being viewed appears to be 12 times closer. The 2nd number is the diameter (in millimeters) of the objective (front) lens. The larger the objective lens, the more light that enters the binocular, making the image appear clearer and brighter.

What's the difference between a porro prism and a roof prism?
In porro-prism binoculars, the front lens is offset from the eyepiece, giving you a greater sense of depth and a wider field of view. In roof prism binoculars, the front lenses are in line with the eyepieces; this allows the binocular to have a smaller, more compact size.
