"The Last Emperor" is at the top of my list as one of the best films of all time. An Academy Award winner for "Best Picture" in the late 1980's, everything about this movie is a "masterpiece." Superb directing by Bernardo Bertolucci; superb acting by the entire cast including John Lone who gives a powerful and memorable performance as the adult Puyi; gorgeous cinematography; a beautiful and unforgettable music score, and a well-written screenplay, which all together bring this remarkable, fascinating true story to life. This film has the ability to mesmerize the viewer to feel like you are actually there in the life of China's last Emperor, Puyi, who became Emperor at 2 1/2 years of age and went from a life of wealth with servants who did everything for him, to imprisonment by the Chinese Communists and eventually became a regular citizen working as a gardener. It is such a powerful performance, you will actually feel sympathy for him at times. I highly reccomend not only for the history but also because it is a fascinating story and a beautiful movie, very well done - one of the best ever in my opinion. I have never grown tired of it.
