I'd purchased the other products in this line and was surprised to actually find this one in my local Wal-Mart store so of course I snapped it up because it was out of stock on-line. I was even more shocked when the associate rang it up for $15 until I noticed that the knob was missing. I figured it's still a good buy and I could get a replacement. I emailed Tramontina customer service for a replacement and received a reply within 8 hours and a replacement knob within 3 - 4 days. I was shocked, impressed, and very happy.
However, even though I didn't have a knob, I'd temporarily taken the knob off of the 6.5 quart dutch oven and used on the braiser so that I could test this new pan with braised chicken with thyme, garlic, ginger, onions, carrots and white wine. To say that this cooker was wonderful is an understatement. Chicken browned very well, created a good fond, and needed very little additional oil (maybe 1 tablespoon). Cleanup was really easy.
The only thing I would suggest is when seasoning rim of pan and lid, turn the oiled portion of these items face down in the oven so that as the oil runs once hot, it drips onto a pan or pad below instead of running onto the cookware.
I would definitely recommend this pan.

I had seen LeCreuset-type cast iron dutch ovens & thought they would be great, but too large for cooking for 2-3 people and the prices $$$$ wow!! So I was thrilled to find this Tramontina 3 qt. braiser. It sits flat & works fine on my ceramic cooktop. The porcelain coating is dark attractive green and the inside is a creamy ivory - with my chocolate walls/granite kitchen, I prefer this to the standard orangy-red or cobalt blue colors. One word of caution, it is LARGE & HEAVY and you'll want to find a place to store it that you can get to it easily without reaching & lifting from a shelf. My solution was to put it in the slide-out drawer under my oven - perfect! I love this braiser to saute and then pop into the oven to slow-roast. For very easy cleanup, just put in some water, cover and simmer on the stove before washing. The price is a great value!

I purchased the Tramontina 6.5 qt. Dutch Oven and the 3 qt. Braiser. I don't know how these compare to other similar priced cast iron products but this is what I found with these.
The enamel finish is not great but not bad for the price. The Dutch Oven had a large, quite obvious, half-inch chip in the enamel. The interior of the lid for the Braiser had a chip of green enamel in it from some other product but was enameled around it. It protrudes prominently. While it is in there securely for now, being enameled over, I imagine with the stresses of heating and cooling, it will eventually chip out exposing the metal. This will rust and expand, chipping out a larger and larger area of the enamel. The pot would be ruined.
I ordered another set. The pot of the Dutch Oven was OK. The casting of the lid was not good, with ripples and variations of thickness. The lid of the Braiser was even worse than the first with imperfections, points of metal, sticking up through the enamel finish. These would of course rust, chipping out the enamel in a progressively larger area.
I mixed and matched the pieces to get the best set and returned the rest. In truth, I was not very happy with the best of the parts, but figured for the price I shouldn't expect too much.
I seasoned the edges of the pots and the lids. I guess these are not enameled because they would eventually chip from putting the heavy lid on and off. While cleaning the drips of oil I caused during the seasoning process I noticed many more defects. Small chips in the enamel around the edges. The dome of one of the lids is way off center with the rim, causing the rim on one side to be twice as wide as the rim on the other side. While the rim on the narrow side is still wide enough to sit on the edge of the pot, it is just barely. I don't know how you cast something that poorly. On the rims of the lids are numerous bumps and ridges that will cause the lid to sit up off of the pot and not to seat and seal properly. I've been fileing these down. Quite a task.
The best you could say about the quality of the casting is that it is mediocre. The overall quality control during the manufacturing process and before final shipment appears to be non-existent. You get what you get.
I no longer think this product is worth the price. There are too many defects to expect them to last for years even though they are cast iron. If you care about the quality of the things you have, these are simply not something you would want in your home.

This is the 3rd Tramontina Enameled Cast Iron that I purchased. I wanted the complete set. The Braiser's interior is a different color (light sage) than the Dutch Oven (Cream). It is not a perfect looking set, but I love it just the same.

Tramotina line of enameled cast iron is fabulous. Very heavy weight and textured on inside of lid to really collect those liquids as it cooks. Just like Grandma used to use.
Rated 5 out of 5 by skyman43202 Great Braiser
Got this to complement my Tramontina Dutch oven. This is perfect for recipes that don't need a 6.5 qt vessel but still need to be covered for part of the cooking process, such as lamb stew or chicken paprikash. Can also go to the table as an attractive serving dish.
Rated 5 out of 5 by ComfortFoodCooker Great dutch oven, great value.
I bought the 6 1/2 qt. dutch oven and the 3 1/2 qt. dutch oven and I am very happy with the quality of both. I wrote reviews for the 6 1/2 qt. pot and, because they are manufactured identically, I suggest everyone read the reviews for both. They are one of the best values I've ever seen. Same as the Le Crueset at 1/6 the cost. WOW!!

Nothing wrong with this pot at all. Braises chicken thighs great. Everything I make in it comes out great. I am going to order one for my son, who visited and really liked it.
Rated 5 out of 5 by D7374 I use this for steask, fried chicken and such. Works great and easy to clean up afterwards

This wonderful cast iron braiser came this week. It is wonderful. The workmanship is on par with the very expensive ones. It is very heavy as cast iron is. The color is beautiful. I am cooking chicken and veggies in it now to make a pot pie which I wil cook in oven (in same ) later. I have already told a friend and she is buying one. Great gift also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by GimmeGimme A real bargain and cooks good also
I used it the day after I got it. Braised some chicken wings. So far I have made pasta sauce in it, carnitas, a stir fry, and braised short ribs. Everything was delicious and easy.
The main thing is to follow the directions on use. I know some of you didn't get them because they are on the back of the piece of cardboard that do around and you probably threw it out. It was practically unreadable any way. Dumb place to put it for sure. Some of the main things are never use it in an oven over 450. By seasoning I imagine they are referring to the exposed cast iron on the rim of the cover and the pot. I use a little veg oil after I cook something. That part got torn when I removed the cardboard from the pan and I'm not sure if you have to season enamel. I don't do it on my other enamel.. Never us an aerosol spray as you could ruin the pan. High heat can ruin the pan also and is not necessary. Keep it at medium or low. Never put a hot pan in cold water and if you have food stains just soak it in dish soap and hot water for several house. I put soap and water in my cast iron enamel and put it on low heat on the stove top and it comes right off. Also use only wood, plastic or nylon utensils or you will scratch the pa and be sure to hand wash only. I would imagine if you sent an email to:
www.tramontina-usa.com that you could get them to send you some written care directions and the warranty info. Enjoy!!!
Rated 5 out of 5 by SarasotaLady The Tramontina cast iron braiser is an excellent value. The smaller size works for my family and fits into the Breville countertop convection oven that I use. I can saute vegetables and chicken breasts, deglaze the pan, and then pop it into the oven to finish cooking. It's heavy even empty, so take that into account. And it was delivered right to my door-- thanks Walmart.

This is a fabulous piece of cookware! I use it about 3 times a week for everything. The lid is heavy keeps the content sealed in! It is a great size for a 4-5 person family. Tramontina is great kitchen equipment.
Rated 4 out of 5 by LaKitchenista Great value
I've had the Tramontina braiser for about a month and have used it three times. It was available on clearance for $30 - a great value compared to my much pricier Le Creuset 5 qt dutch oven. It arrived in great condition; no chipped enamel coating as some other reviewers experienced. The braiser cooks and heats evenly, cleans up easily, and works well on my ceramic top stove. I've even used it to cook sausage patties. They turned out nicely browned with a slightly crisp surface (much preferred to the soft browned surface I usually see from other pans).
My one caution with this product, or any enameled cast iron cookware, is that once it heats you should lower the temperature on the burner. The braiser retains a fair amount of heat (even without the lid) and therefore cooks well on a lower heat setting than expected (e.g., instead of medium, use medium-low).

cooks wonderfully - holds heat, cooks evenly, made an amazing short rib and a fraction of the cost of similar braisers - gets my highest recommendation

Rated 5 out of 5 by butterknife Wow, One great product
If you take cooking seriously, you can't do better than this brassier or it's bigger mate "the dutch oven". I have purchased both for friends and family, and receive many thanks. This will be cherished as a family heirloom
Rated 1 out of 5 by freddyfreeloader Not inspected before shipping
The product did not sit flat on my ceramic cooktop. The is truly a problem for a cast iron braiser. Walmart's return policy allowed me to return the item and receive a full refund. I wish the manufacturer would check these braisers before shipping them. They come wrapped in cardboard so no one can really tell that they are warped on the bottom.
I will continue to shop at Walmart.

Really like this pot !! Haven't braised in it yet but have baked in the oven. Will last forever, pretty color too.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Sadie12 I liked everything about this pan except on the inside of the cover there was some sort of brown glue or something that didn't come off so I took it back to the store and haven't had time to replace it.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Rosesdaughter Love to cook in this pot!
I wrote a long review about the 6.5 Tramontina pot and this braiser is every bit as great. I can see lots of stew, pot roast, chicken and dumplings, etc. going into this pot. I've been reading a lot of reviews complaining about the knob and the fact that the knob cannot go over about 450 degrees. Cooks Illustrated suggests for owners of Tramontina pots and Le Creuset to purchase a metal knob at the hardward store and change it out. How hard is that? NOT. This is a great pot that I know I will have for years and years.
Rated 1 out of 5 by NYCCOOK Does NOT cook the same as LeCreuset!
I bought this Cast Iron cookware because I believed it would cook as well as LeCreuset. It does NOT! It has HOT SPOTS that LeCreuset NEVER has! Do not buy this cookware.
Rated 1 out of 5 by PKDiddy Showed up damaged in an otherwise undamaged manufacturer's carton. Poor quality control.

This performs extremely well. As to be expected...it is HEAVY.
Rated 5 out of 5 by KatherineAnn Just the right size for two!
Love this smaller version of the 6.5 dutch oven. Hubby and I are empty nesters and its just the right size (with room to spare really) for some chicken or the country style boneless pork ribs that are on the stove right now! We can have a meal and have some leftovers for him to take for lunch without eating the same meal more than once. I have the 6.5 for making larger batches.
