Anyone who has ever seen a movie by Tim Robbins (okay - Howard the Duck excluded) will have to admit that he is one of the finest actors of our time. In this movie, he has gone way beyond my expectations. Together, he and Sarah Polley create a chemistry that draws the viewer into their worlds and builds a cocoon around us so that we are able to understand, at least in a small way, the incredible emotional and physical pain and devastation each has suffered. Sarah plays the young Hannah, a survivor of the 10-year Balkan Wars. I won't tell you more, because you need to watch the movie to truly understand. For anyone who needs help to heal from abuse or trauma, this movie is a must see. This would be an excellent movie for discussion groups. Also, we are being introduced, belatedly, to the talent of Herr Sverre Anker Ousdal who is one of the finest actors that Europe has given us, but most Americans have never seen him before. You can't miss him. He is the very tall man who runs the oil rig. If you like his performance in this movie, than you will want to purchase HAMSUN, starring Herr Ousdal and Herr Max von Sydow. Another great movie about the real effects of war on those who survive.
Rated 5 out of 5 Exceptional acting
I loved this movie. Sarah Polley is excellent as always. She is such a great dramatic actress. Nothing flashy or made up. She is genuine and real. Tim Robbins is superb. The writing was beyond words.
You have to see this movie.
