I bought the HawkEye Portable Fish Finder, because I was going fishing in Canada, where I was going to use a resort's boats that didn't have fish finders in their boats. For the price, this didn't seem like it could go wrong. The HawkEye actually did more than I expected for the price. It shows you depths, fish and their relative depth (are they suspended or at the bottom), and whether or not the bottom is weedy or rocky. You can simply throw the transducer on the float over the side of the boat when you're drifting or trolling slowly. An unexpected surprise was that the transducer worked inside the boat! Per the instruction manual, if the boat is fiberglass or thin aluminum, the transducer can make readings through the hull! It can also be used this way for ice fishing!! It reads through the ice!!! That's a lot better than drilling hole after hole! This product will always be in my tackle box.

Since purchasing the Hawk Eye Portable Fish Finder, I have used it several times while trolling in my one-man pontoon boat.
The product works exactly as advertised.
The screen is very easy to see, the settings (senstivity, backlight, audio alarm are very easy to change).
I have used this for more than 15 hours andthe batteries are still going strong.
The unit does cut off at depths > 100' - as advertised, but since I rarely fish waters that deep it is of no real concern to me.
I highly recommend this product as an alternative to more expensive units that require a separate battery source.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Digger61 job well done
I recived this as a gift and sent to me, as I live in Australia I used it to fish for Murry Cod and Yellow Belly on the Murry Darling river. I was able to locate fish hidden under fallen trees and deep holes.
But takes a bit of to getting used to the readings to decipher them. It does not like very muddy water thou will work in discolour water.
I like it and so do me mates.
I dislike battery compartment cover it was a difficult to access.

hey for 50 buck this thing met and exceeded all expectations!
Rated 5 out of 5 by FishingBob Neat little fish finder
Have two boats and needed a portable one for my fiberglass 15 ft Gheenoe. Was skeptical about its claim that it would read through the boats hull. But it really does. Makes it truly a portable unit. I hang it around my neck and put the transponder on the floor and its ready to go. Does not get any easier than that...Easy to read and use...Would recommended to anyone looking for a portable unit. I could see where it would be real handy for someone fishing off of a pier also. Put on a broomstick and look sideways for a 100 foot view off of any pier. You would know exactly how deep to set your bobber and where to cast it.....Hmmmmm.....Gonna have to try that....Good Luck Fellow Fisherman.....Ohhhh...One more thing...This unit will not read at high speed...Ok for trolling but not high speed unless you mount it permanently...
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sonoma Nice gadget
This is pretty neat. And for what I needed the price was good. All in all good value. I only wish it could distinguish fish types. :)
It is simple to use after you get the hang of it.
Rated 5 out of 5 by DIEN I purchased this item for my husband as a birthday gift. We both love it. It is very easy to use and the price is very good. I was very surprised how accurate it really is. Everyone who goes fishing should have one.
Rated 4 out of 5 by pythonman Pretty Nifty Fish Finder
I bought this fish finder to use when fishing out of my kayak. I can't attest to the longevity of the unit since I have only had it approximately a month but I am definitely pleased with the performance. The unit is easy to use. Basically you turn it on and it is ready to go. It is very easy to figure out how to turn on or off the fish alarm, battery saver feature, etc without having to read the book (it's a man thing). The battery life is very good, the depth readings are accurate and the structure readings match pretty close to what I know to be the terrain of my favorite fishing spots.
Rated 5 out of 5 by micmack2000 Very easy to use
For a low priced fish finder this is great. First day I used the float then mounted to the boat which I think worked better. I plan on fishing from the bank and will go back to the float. Being able to use it both ways is a great ideal.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Justanotherme I like it.
It does what it sais. I think this works like they say. It hasn't helped me catch more fish yet but at least I know their down there. After all it cant make the fish eat if their not hungrey. It's just too hot out right now to be fishing. Cord is a little long but I guess that could come in handy some day. I just rapped it up on a little plastic spool I had from some camping rope I had that was used up. It worked well.
Rated 5 out of 5 by fishingtx Better than expected
This fish finder is fantastic. Worked it out of a canoe in 2 ft waves and watched a fish come from the bottom of the lake to the surface. The different grades for weeds and rock makes finding strucutre a breeze. Two people caught 25 crappie each in 4 hours because we had this locator to show us where they were. Great deal / buy
Rated 4 out of 5 by LittleJon great for the price
Hey, I read the other reviews and said"What the heck" I'll give it a try. You know, it works great for the price. Nothing fancy with lots of flexibility.
Rated 4 out of 5 by wesman1 works well & compact size
I have had this product for about a year now, works well, used it maybe 15 times, still has original batteries.....great to get basic lake info, depth, ground cover, and so forth. Not high tech like the $300.00 models, but compact & easy to carry around...now I see the price is half what I paid, oh well, live and learn.
Rated 3 out of 5 by gonefishing59 As expected
I bought this after I got my kayak mainly to use as a depth finder. I read all the reviews and knew more or less what I was purchasing. It seems to be fairly accurate as a depth finder which is what I wanted. I am pleased with this purchase and would recomend it to anyone wanting this type of fish finder.
Rated 2 out of 5 by fRod19 Not ment for a Boat
You cant use this in a boat the radar dose not stay under water with the movement of the boat or trolling you have to be in one set location in order for it to keep the sensor down in the water. It needs help with a little extra weight.
Rated 5 out of 5 by assassin123 hawkeye fishfinder
i just bought this product and i'm still trying to figure things out.so far everything seems to work properly.i just hope it would differ between bait fish or bass. it seems to detect all types of fish...lol..u gotta figure out the rest........
Rated 5 out of 5 by LoneWolfGK Works Great
This fishfinder works great. It is easy to use and gives good contrast for bottom, growth and fish.
It can see thru the botton of my boat and I can place it in the water about 20 feet from the boat.
Works better than my son-in-laws $250.00 fishfinder.
Rated 5 out of 5 by FISHING2009 A great purchase
We used this on a week long fishing trip. The product helped use find the right amount on weed/rocks on the bottom. Also us finding the right depth was crucial. Last summer we caught 14 fish between three people over 5 days. We caught 35 over 5 days with three people this summer. This product works!!!! PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Kingfisherman Works Great, 5 Stars
This thing works great on the lake I fish at, Now if it could just catch fish,,,,,,,,,,,,.

Rated 4 out of 5 by KayakFisher2 Great Portable Unit
This is a fantastic unit as far as being portable. The graphics are not the best. Battery life is better than expected. Over all, it is a great value for the money.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fishinking excellent product
This product really works. I used it in the local bay and I caught more fish than I had ever caught out of the same area. Real simple to use, and I would highly recommend it to anyone serious about fishing.
Rated 1 out of 5 Unusable product
The Hawkeye Fish Finder was my first finder but I found it to be unusable. I took it out to Canyon Lake and found the cord which is connected to sensor was to heavy, and every time I threw it out, the cord would sink to the floor of the lake which inturn pulled sensor back to boat. Don't let the price of $58 fool you, save your money.
Rated 5 out of 5 by thepa This is great
I have been fishing for many years in minnesota and this is the best depth/ fish finder I ever used.
This is the easiest fish finder I ever used. Very simple and very basic not alot of stuff that you can't or don't know how to use. If you just want a simple and easy to use depth/fish finder BUY this.
I can't wait to use it ice fishing
Rated 2 out of 5 by luge41 would not buy
I used this product once and it worked great, I was very impressed with it. A week later I went fishing again and it did not even turn on. The inside of the battery compartment was stickey, almost as if it melted in the sun? It was a hot day the first and only time I used it, but that should not have happened. I would suggest saving your money and buy a better quality fish finder.
Rated 4 out of 5 by tusky For the price, does the job
I took the HawkEye to a remote Canadian lake. I was able to map the isos and find out where the fish may be hiding. The extra is the indication of fish below you, but I did not focus on that. I was more interested in getting the lake mapped. Battery length is great. If you are looking for a finder that runs on flashlight batteries and not a 12v car / motorcycle battery, I'd try this.
Rated 5 out of 5 by tsharpe13 Love my fish finder!
I would purchase from seller again. Loved my fish/depth finder. PErfect for my kayak!
Rated 5 out of 5 by jtwood24 Good fish finder for money
Have used this product twice on a local lake and the depth finder works great. Even found several fish when using the product on an extension handle and scanning side to side under water from the boat.
Works as expected and even caught a few fish! Depth finder is working properly as we were in about 16ft of water. Also it picks up weeds and rock piles.
Rated 1 out of 5 by fishwhenucan Good unit for fishing rocky bottom
Initially bought this product for the value. Could not get it to shoot through the hull as advertised.
(.040 alumin.) Will not read depth if bottom is the least bit muddy or murky. I guess you get what you pay for! Will be returning it.
Rated 3 out of 5 by Micca worth the price
This is a pretty slick product. It has a couple of major drawback tho. All fish look the same and are displayed the same. whether it's looking at minnows or monsters is impossible to tell. Also it does not have a temperature component
The ability to side scan I find really valuable
I also wish it had to ability to shorten the cord. I only use about 10 feet and the rest gets in the way.
