Rated 5 out of 5 by lctbone Spencer Tracy's last truly great dramatic role
Spencer Tracy walks into the middle of a mystery and finds himself trapped in the desert town of Black Rock, harassed and confounded by a superior supporting cast that includes Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin, and Ernest Borgnine (who gets thoroughly trounced by the one-armed Tracy in a classic screen fight). The story is a modern day Western set in the years after WW II, tautly directed by John Sturges, who expertly juggles the aforementioned cast in addition to Dean Jaggers, Walter Brennan, John Ericsson and Anne Francis. One of Tracy's last truly great dramatic roles that scored him a Best Actor nomination. Robert Ryan's smoothly menacing villain is a perfect foil for Tracy in their many confrontations. This is a not to be missed classic film noir with a superlative cast, script, and director beautifully remastered on DVD. Highly recommended!
