Rated 1 out of 5 by Fraurisa Too short
I saw Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis just about the same time I saw the tremendous mini series The Kennedy's --also available on line from Walmart. I shouldn't compare the two because they have nothing in common in so far as The Kennedy's is a vastly well produced mini series that centers on Joseph Kennedy's massive wealth and his family's (ultimate) political power. Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis is the former First Lady's story--before and after the death of President Kennedy. Her story (here) is a sad tale (in the obvious) but this seems like someone decided to take various paragraphs from books and 'paste' them together in a sloppy script. All of the actors are miscast ( I think) -I know who they are and some of them are very good--but not in this. Joanne Whalley appears short! Jackie was a tall woman with unique photographic beauty and a strong presence.Whalley is pretty and she's tries with the 'debutante accent' but she (appears) overwhelmed--its hard to 'imitate' an icon. Curiously, Katie Holmes is an actress I associate with a lovely, soft presence ( in movies)--almost childlike--and her performance as Jackie (in The Kennedys ) is superb--she must have known that Jackie --for all her strength-was also gentle and sensitive. Holmes- with her porcelain features and finishing school voice doesn't just 'imitate' Jackie--she's her 'own' believable Jackie. Tom Skerrit is a good actor but he's not commanding enough to play a powerhouse like Joe Kennedy. Joe Kennedy was loved, hated, feared and respected ( foremost by his children)--Skerrit acts like he's Joe Kennedy-lite--a somewhat low key almost weak?? man.Joe Kennedy wasn't weak until his stroke forced him into a dependance he despised but couldn't control. Tim Matheson's John Kennedy is awful--he's heavily made up and his hair color doesn't match from scene to scene. Matheson is good in light comedies and some dramatic roles--but he (seemingly) has no charisma-as JFK.Certainly NOTHING that would mesmerize a nation! There are movies and even historical accounts that are much, much better than this....this production is short on content, talent and style. Short and much too long. Thanks
Rated 1 out of 5 by gacritic Just couldnt get into it
I couldnt get past the actresses nose!...Im sure there are plenty of actresses with a nose similar to Jackies...add a bunette wig and thicken the eyebrows and there you have it. And it seemed like she was trying to hard to act like Jackie...Just couldnt get into to the movie cuz of it.
