Rated 4 out of 5 by RPaulM Good value for a low end laptop
Bought this 2011 model 14z at the very end of its product cycle after reading many reviews. (This laptop will be for my college freshman daughter.) The 2012 model Inspiron 14z is a completely different design that is smaller and slightly lighter than this 2011 14z. This 2011 version I'm reviewing is a great value. Solid build, with metal case. Excellent battery life of 8+ hrs, better than the new 2012 version. Keyboard is good, though not backlit. Touchpad is fine. Wireless worked well and it has bluetooth. The free Adobe software is a nice bonus. It seems like it attracts fingerprints but that's life. Any smaller screem "ultrabook" or pre-ultrabook will not have a CD/DVD drive as this does.

My last Dell laptop was easy to type on, very responsive. On this one I am having to use a mouse because if I try to use the built in "mouse" I have to press so hard on the left click key I just wear out my finger. I mean, you really have to press super hard. It's ridiculous. Over all, the keyboard is not very ergonomically well-designed. I wish I'd picked some other model.
Rated 4 out of 5 by rocsilue amazing, real light, yet powerful
Well i must admit im giving this a for as initially i wanted the more powerful xps 15. Nontheless this is a great sub its real powerful, great web cam i must add, amazing speed and its portability is awesome but the big plus is its stylish looks to have all that with one laptop plus affordability? this 'techy' girl just could not resist!!
Rated 5 out of 5 by tsidebottom10 Great Laptop
I bought this laptop for school to do MS Office work in my CIS classes, and I instantly fell in love with it. The backlit keyboard is a big plus for me, it's fast and can handle a heavy work load.
Another big plus is that I found great use out of the HDMI, and can hook it straight up to my 32 inch HD tv for watching HD movies, and even playing games, I am a regular Call of Duty fan, and I found myself selling my XBox 360 as this laptop has become my main video game console.
Great for school
Good for gaming
Feels sturdy, built to last
Rated 5 out of 5 by LSWO2009 Excellent laptop for the price and performance
Pros: With a Core I5, this computer has very good speed. Very good touch on the keys of this laptop, with responsive trackpad. Excellent for travel, and mobility in the field, weight/size of the computer is perfect.
Cons: I don't have any, I can't believe it.
I am very happy with this laptop for work, travel, and education.
Rated 3 out of 5 by Jkkm Brightness !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I recently bought a 14z inspiron, everything is great for the price I paid, but ever since I've been using it the brightness changes on its own every time I open a new window or atleast every 20 seconds.
Rated 1 out of 5 by kanditt868 LCD not working out of box
Got this laptop 2 days ago (11 September) and straight out of the box the LCD is not working so I called dell support. They called today (thursday) to schedule a technician tomm (friday) to visit for the repair.
Dell support is great thus far which is why i chose to go Dell again...but such an anticlimax to be excited and then have it not work out of the box...
will keep you updated...

I highly recommend to students looking for great performance without the bulk.
Rated 4 out of 5 by realrockmama I Like it
I love my new Inspiron 14z, it's actually the 2nd one I've purchased this year. It's size is perfect for a womans smaller hand and it's so light I can carry it around with me easily. I like the facial recognition sign in and I'd tell my friends where I got it if asked.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Outinthemancave I am just thrilled with my laptop 14z
The little woman said I could buy a new laptop. After 2 months of reading reviews and talking to people that have opinions I trust I settled on the 14z. It has an I5second gen chip/8GB ram/750GB 7200rpm hard-drive. I am just blown away with it's boot speed and overall speed in everything I do. I am impressed by it's looks. And when I recommend this to anyone, the back-lit keyboard is a must. This is our 9th Dell (1 has been scrapped, and 4 are in semi-retirement). They have had a few problems, but Dell service has seen me through all of them. I have had no problems with this unit, and as I said am just thrilled with it
Rated 4 out of 5 by Debayan N411Z - Nice laptop for everyday use
I bought this laptop for my wife for everyday Home use. This is definitely worth the price and the specs. The only con that I can think of are the keys are a little small . Other than that its a very nice laptop .

Rated 4 out of 5 Good but...
I bought my Inspiron 14z in November and have enjoyed it. I put in the extra money for the light up keyboard and find it delightful. I like the sleek design, the weight and the overall aesthetic design. However, I have had some issues with the computer. It started out very fast and very efficient, but over the past two or so months I have noticed a lot of programs crashing. First Skype, then Windows Media, then just about everything. Today it got to the point where I couldn't save my documents in Word. I called hardware and we ran a diagnostics test (I knew it wasn't software) and we discovered the hard disk is on the fritz and I need a new one. They were very good about it and are sending a new one in two business days. I am disappointed that barely six months into it and an important element like the hard disk needs to be replaced. I'm going to get the extended warranty now in case this happens again.

Great computer lite and easy
Rated 3 out of 5 by gsta4 Nice performance - but long warranty a must-have
Bought this laptop last November. Looks great, seems solidly-constructed, and is light and thin. Performance with my Core i5 and 6 GB RAM is beautiful.
However, you must be sure you have a strong warranty to cover it (though don't overpay for one). My battery went bad within a few months with very light use, and Dell had to send me a new one. Then my LCD developed a problem with its brightness levels when on battery power, so Dell sent a tech to replace it with a refurbished one. As soon as the tech finished the installation, the laptop won't turn on at all - likely meaning the motherboard is fried. Now I have to send it to Dell for repair or replacement. If I only had a 90-day warranty (or if this happened after November when my one-year warranty is up, if I didn't extend it), I'd be facing repair costs almost as high as the cost of a new laptop.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Breanne Great laptop for the price
For being an ultrabook, this laptop is incredibly affordable. The speed, graphics, and internal RAM are very impressive for a laptop of this price. While it cannot match the high-end laptops in terms of graphics or multimedia capabilities, for the average user looking for a fast, highly capable laptop for a great price, this laptop cannot be beat.
Rated 5 out of 5 by JaredsReveiws Excelent laptop. Engineered perfectly. 7 is fast
I recently switched from Apple. I love this little 14Z laptop. It's fast, dependable and the back lit keyboard is a major plus. My 3 generation I3 Intel processor has plenty of horse power. The Intel high definition graphics are good compared to a third party video card.
Battery life with the 6 cell is an easy 7 hours on one charge with moderate use.
Not to big, not too small but just right.
I also must brag a bit about the l.e.d. back lighting and the truffle, I love it. This technology is hard to find even in today's competitors laptops at this model level.
Quiet Fan, computer runs cool even when major multi tasking.
The 14z has the perfect amount of U.S.B. connectors and H.D.M.I inputs and more. Not too many but not left shy of what the computer needs for it's size.
I highly recommend this computer too anyone looking for a laptop between a net book and a actual laptop. This 14Z is perfect sitting right in the middle capable off doing everything the most of the monster laptops can do all in the small package of something close to a net book but just shy of being that small.
Rated 5 out of 5 by ElizaG great experience
I have no complaints about this laptop, other than the easily-made smudges on the exterior of the laptop. I am not using it for any fancy uses, just the basic Office, browsing the Internet, and regular software, and it is doing a fantastic job at serving the purpose. I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Njoy710570 Disappointing
I have had many dell products over the last 10 yeas and always loved them. This laptop is disappointing and not great quality. I have only had it 6 months and have had many issues. All which cost money to fix.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Tobianohorselover bumpy start, fantastic finish
My experience with Dell started off very bumpy, but in the end, Dell came through with flying colors.
I ordered an Inspiron 14z laptop. I read the reviews, took into consideration there were lots of complaints about the screen going black and customers spending hours with Dell technical support with no success. I have owned a Dell desktop for 10 years with no problems so I convinced myself I would get a working laptop. Wrong. I received my new Inspiron 14z within 10 days after ordering it. Opened it and immediately realized I had the same problem I read about. I would get a black screen all the time. So I spent over 5 hours on the phone with a member of the Dell technical support team. She tried every avenue to no avail. We thought at one point we had figured out the problem but it didn’t last long. She even called several times with new ideas but nothing worked to get the laptop to work correctly. After spending over 5 hours on the phone with Kim, and a response to my email, I was contacted by a Dell Executive Customer Support Team representative. Since I was totally displeased with the performance of the Inspiron 14z within the first 21 days of ordering it, the Dell Customer support team rep sent me a new laptop with upgrades. Within a few days I received my new Dell XPS 14z. WOW! What a beautiful machine. It works beautiful, is fast, and has taken every task I ask, in stride. The backlit keyboard makes this laptop the best. The only suggestion I would make is the letters on the keys are white and the keyboard is silver. This makes it very difficult to see the letters. This is not a problem with me since I type all the time, but it could present a big problem for those who need to see the letters on the keys.
In all, I love this laptop. Its size and weight makes it the perfect portable machine with power to spare. Everyone else in these reviews give all the details so I find giving them repetitive. Just know that from a busy wife, mother, grandmother, housewife and horse trainer, this laptop is exactly what I want and expected from Dell Corporation.
Thank you Dell.
Rated 5 out of 5 by CheriM Great Laptop for a Budget Minded Consumer
I am very impressed with this little laptop. I was a little worried about what I could get for a laptop in my tight budget, especially since I was coming from using top of the line Dell's prior to this purchase. It may not be the latest and greatest technology like you'd find in a much more expensive laptop but it's plenty to last for a good four years or more without needing any hardware upgrades.
Pros: Lightweight, super portable, good quality construction, great hardware package, great price
Cons: Not too sure I like the little rubber covers over the ports. It was a little slow the first few times I used it but it was because the pc was still working on software updates and adjusting to my user habits.

We bought the laptop to use when we are traveling to check our email and to stay in touch with our children/grandchildren. We use the laptop all of the time, it is very user friendly and thus far we have had no issues. Even setting it up for the first time, what no problem (for grandparents this is truly noteworthy, we are not computer geniuses).
Rated 5 out of 5 by uhstoisu12 My new best friend
This is my fist laptop. I just graduated from high school and look forward spending hours of study time at college with this computer. Love the back-lit keyboard and the screen size is perfect! I think the size and weight of this machine is great and since I am not a gamer, this laptop will more that serve its purpose!
Rated 4 out of 5 by Ocasio5 Meets My Needs
Uses: Productivity (2010 Word and Excel), Internet research, and Home. I have a Dell Studio XPS i7 Quad Core, 8G RAM desktop, so I don’t need speed.
Pros: The Dell Inspiron 14z i3 Core laptop is an excellent choice for the price. The island style keyboard has a great feel for word processing. The i3 Dual Core (hyper-threading) is perfect for MS 2010 Word and Excel (work and home). The backlit keyboard is great for low light conditions.
Cons: I deleted most of the Bloatware. The touchpad buttons don’t have that tactile “click.” The porthole covers are a nuisance. I don’t understand why the speakers are placed under the laptop. I use an alcohol-free, computer cleaner often because the brushed-steel finish collects fingerprints like a magnet. I wanted to purchase an i5 core, but it was only configured in Fire Red. I preferred a more conservative color.
Summary: I’m satisfied with the Dell Inspiron 14z i3 Core because it meets my need for portability, price, and performance. I read all the Dell reviews (extremely informative) and magazine reviews. My primary use is advanced Word and Excel (productivity), which eliminates the tablet market. I loaded the software I’ve been using, and I don’t have to purchase or learn new apps. Also, only a few tablets have USB ports and CD/DVD, which is necessary for my job. The above “cons” are minor when you consider the price and performance. Bottom line: shop for your needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by bigjay018 A very good Laptop
A vert good laptop. So good I brought another one a week later.
Rated 2 out of 5 by dukies While i am pleased with the Dell Inspiron 14z I would recommend pruchasing it in the Fire Red. The Fire Red finish shows all of your finger prints and all smudges. The laptop will look dirty and greasy looking within the first 20 minutes of use. Unless you can handle a dirty looking laptop, then I would recommend that you do not purchase the Fire Red.
