There ended up being nice pants for my son. They are "Khaki" style pants rather than thin dress slacks and have an adjustable waist.

These wear really well and wash really well though my son wears out the knee fairly often. That's to be expected with nice cotton though and he hates the reinforced knee so we just come back for more :). My son was not out of a 12 yet but needed a slightly bigger waist. This works well for him. He is not fond of the feeling of the button and extra elastic (sensory) but we cut off the extra and taped some cotton tshirt material over the "itch" and that did the trick.

Size is perfect, but faded after only one wash.
