Here's the deal, these cost me less than $30, what could I expect to get when other brands run, well into and, over $300. Lets see -----
For the first time trying noise cancelling units, I couldn't have spent a better $30.
I've never tried the, very much, more expensive ones, but I'm very happy with what I got.
Tried to watch a movie on my tablet, while traveling from St Louis to Phoenix, missed half the words, and the engine noise did impact my trying to sleep. As a note, I was in 1st class, if that makes a difference.
Got these, and on the return flight, 1st class, used them to get some sleep, and watch another movie. Slept well and heard the movie.
Sleeping: it was like having a small amount of White Noise, the engine noise faded far away.
For the movie: it did block much, not all by any means, of the outside noise and tended to amplify the sound track.
Before spending a lot more, let these be your first try, I think for the money you'll be very pleased. Gee, I might not bother to dig deeper into my wallet after all!

Maybe I got a defective pair but I found these no different from any basic headphones in cancelling noise - in other words - they don't. I have Panasonic noise cancelling headphones and if you know what noise cancelling sounds like you can totally see the difference. I returned them.
