A pool cover pump buying guide

A pool cover pump can be a helpful pool supply for your pool cover. Basically, quality pool cover pumps pump away the water that accumulates on a pool cover during the fall and winter months. If you don't remove that water from the pool cover, then the water can seep into the pool and infect the pool water, or the water can freeze during the winter and damage your pool cover and possibly your swimming pool. Pool cover pumps are convenient ways to protect against this because they pump water quickly away from the cover. How do you know, though, which is the best pool cover pump to buy? Consider a few simple points to learn about these interesting swimming pool accessories.

>> How much power do you want in your pool cover pump?

quality pool cover pumps

How much water a water pump can pump is measured in gallons per hour (GPH), and many of the best pool cover pumps have relatively light pumping capacity, around 200 - 400 GPH. If you think about it, you don't really need a lot of pumping capacity to get the water off of your pool cover because you don't have that much water on your pool cover. You can buy pool cover pumps, though, that double as regular water pumps. These pumps can have GPH capacity of up to 1,200 GPH and can be used to pump water from your basement if it floods. Consider buying dual water pump / pool cover pump brands if you want to buy a water pump as well as a pool cover pump.

>> Do you want your pool cover pump to include a hose?

Some of the best pool cover pumps will include a hose attachment that guides the water away from the pool, while others require you to connect your garden hose to the pump in order for the pump to function. Pool cover pumps that come with a hose are convenient because you don't have to worry about whether your garden hose is compatible with your pool cover pump. If you have a unique type of garden hose, it's a good idea to buy a pool cover pump with a hose included with the pump. Make sure that you measure or look up the size of your garden hose if you think you don't need a hose with your pool cover pump because you'll not want to buy a pool cover pump that isn't compatible with your garden hose.

>> Consider pool cover pumps that have automatic turn on features

Other quality pool cover pumps will come equipped with a switch attachment that will turn the pump on whenever the switch senses that rainwater is accumulating on your pool cover. This can be a pretty nice feature to have since you can simply set your pool cover pump up once at the beginning of the fall season and not have to worry about it again until the spring. New pool cover pumps are usually able to remove snow from your pool cover, so you won't have to worry about damage from snow accumulation with these pumps as well.

>> Consider other pool cover pump featurespool cover pump size

There are many measurements you should consider, like maximum and minimum water head, to find a quality pool cover pump. Water head is the depth of the standing water that your pump pumps away. Most pool cover pumps will have a maximum water head of around 7 1/2 feet. You most likely won't have 7 1/2 feet of water standing on your pool cover, but if you plan on using your new pool cover pump as a regular water pump you should be sure to check the maximum water head to make sure you are comfortable with that number.

Minimum water head is usually about 3/16 of an inch for pool cover pumps. It's a good idea to have as low a minimum water head as you can if you have a sensitive pool cover because then the pump will remove more water from the cover. Many quality pool cover pumps are able to be fully submerged in water, and this is a good feature to have if you plan on using the pool cover pump as a pool pump or speed pool pump.

Finally, consider the length of the electric cord that the pool cover pump uses. It's a good idea to have a cord that is able to connect to the outlet nearest to your pool, especially if you don't have an extension cord to supplement the pump's cord.

If you think about what you want out of a pool cover pump and a few pool cover pump features, you'll be able to buy a pool cover pump for your pool that meets your needs. Consider this accessory carefully to find the best pool cover pump for you and to ultimately get the most out of your outdoor play pool.
