Watch Movements
There are four major types of watch movements: mechanical and automatic, quartz, solar and kinetic.
Mechanical and Automatic
Mechanical watches are wound by hand. Automatics are self-winding with the movement of the wrist. But if an automatic watch is not worn for a day or two, it will have to be wound by hand.
Watch Displays
Watches show time in two ways: with a digital display or with an analog display. Digital watches use a liquid crystal display (LCD) to show time in numbers. Analog watches feature a traditional dial and hands to mark the time. Some watches have both forms of display.
