Great for caching, 06/06/2009

I read reviews that said this was very difficult to learn to use, but i found it very easy to use and the menus self-explanitory. had it mastered inside of an hour. It shows that it comes with Topo 7, but it comes with the newer topo 8. the topo 8 program is more difficult to use but if you just use the precut map discs then you dont need topo 8 unless you want to download extra maps, but i have found the precut maps to be sufficiant for geo-caching and navigation, but if you really want to download the aerial maps then i recomend getting the $30 annual subscription so you can download as much as you want. one last note is that i found that when i loaded the precut maps that i had to tell it that i was loading to a pn-20 or the gps would not calculate driving routes. other than that it works great, i get an average accuracy of +/- 15 feet in fairly dense tree cover :)

Great tool for farmers, 05/07/2009

I bought this tool with the anticipaion of only using it to measure the boudaries of fields that I was planning to plant this spring and summer, but I have explored the features of this product and have found many other uses for it, including turn by turn while driving, altimeter readings, hunting and general GPS usage. It's true - there is a bit of a learning curve and you need to be ready to read th manual and not just go stright out hunting the day you get the tool, it takes some time to get used to, but once you do it is very user friendly and it has more details and features than a person of my intelligence could ever contend. Good tool - a bit pricey, but I don't plan on buying another handheld anytime soon. The tool itself is pretty rugged, it must be if it goes from tractor to truck to bag to minivan to wherever else I feel like seeing where I am in relation to GPS coordinants.

Topos are the feature, 12/28/2008

It is nice to have a GPS with true 7.5 minute USGS topo maps. This has it. However, as with every handheld GPS that I have owned (this is number four), instructions could be much clearer. It is as if software writers, think their job is done with supplying you with their product. Transferring of topo maps from the supplied Topo USA 7.0 to the PN-40 could be much more detailed. I've done it, but there should be much more help with definition of terms and explanations of what comprises a "grid size", why selecting magnifications are importanat (at all?), how big these maps are and what it may cause in the PN-40 if too big....what is too big? How about some real help. It appears as if it is all trial and error. I have been an engineer for over 30 years and had to deal with this and four additional digital devices for Christmas. Except for the Kodak M893 digital camera, all were nightmares to learn. A little more effort in determining potential customer usage in product development and manual writing before shoving these products out the door, is needed.

The Future of GPS is Here Today, 02/14/2009

This GPS with the latest geocaching updates provided by DeLorme takes GPS to a whole new realm. I get WAAS consistently with readings of +/- 5 feet from the cache. The amount of aerial imagery and maps provided (most included, others cheap to buy) is astounding. The future of GPS is here today. Easy to use yet full-featured, this is that rare homerun product.
